An Idaho man was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Tuesday after being convicted of his sixth DUI, authorities said.

Roy Rico, 38, of Caldwell, will be eligible for parole in six years, according to the Canyon County prosecutor’s office, which had initially sought a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 10 years, the Idaho Statesman reports.
Rico was arrested in November after blowing past a stop sign and nearly smashing into another car. Police said he reeked of alcohol and had trouble standing up at the time. An open bottle of beer was also found on the floor of his vehicle, KTVB reports.
Prosecutors said Rico’s blood-alcohol content during the incident was .255, or more than three times the legal limit to drive. Rico was on probation at the time for a previous felony conviction for drunken driving in 2015, when he was arrested with a BAC of .317.
Rico also had felony DUI convictions in 2011 and 2004, as well as misdemeanor DUI convictions in 2002 and 2001, according to the station.
“Impaired driving is a significant risk to public safety that can often have a ripple effect across the community,” Deputy Prosecutor Ingrid Batey said in a statement. “Mr. Rico is extremely lucky he hasn’t hurt or killed someone over the years. There is no doubt he belongs in prison for an extensive period of time.”
