Jealously wasn’t to blame in a love-triangle that ended in murder — but rather a prank, according to authorities.
Houston Police said Thomas Rolle allegedly killed his girlfriend’s estranged husband Sunday over a practical joke involving a stolen identification card, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
Rolle, 29, was arrested Monday in the stabbing death of 37-year-old Jason Ryan Maas, who was in the process of getting a divorce from the suspect’s girlfriend.
Prior to the killing, Maas reportedly stole Rolle’s ID card as part of a prank, which also included hiding the car that his estranged wife and her new boyfriend shared, according to the newspaper.
Rolle reportedly responded by threatening Maas in a series of phone calls until he agreed to return the stolen ID card. However, Maas never showed up outside a motel to give back the ID as planned, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Authorities found Maas lying in a pool of blood around 6:15 a.m. Sunday in a parking lot near the motel where he lived.
Rolle allegedly admitted to a friend that he stabbed Maas “because the guy played a prank on him and took his identification,” according to court documents.
He was arrested and booked Monday at Harris County Jail, where he is being held without bail.
