NEW YORK (AP) — A jury has awarded $45 million to a Manhattan philanthropist who was nearly killed by a shopping cart thrown from a parking garage in 2011.
Marion Hedges was emotional as the verdict was announced Friday. The 53-year-old said it was the end of “a long, long road.”
Hedges was injured at the East River Plaza Mall in Harlem in 2011 after buying Halloween candy for underprivileged children.
Her lawsuit contended the mall’s owner and security firm ignored complaints about kids turning it into a “mini war zone.” They plan to appeal.
The boys who tossed the cart, then 12 and 13, were sent to juvenile facilities.
Hedges said she’ll donate some of the money to a youth center so kids have better things to do than throw shopping carts when bored.
